Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are, undoubtedly, the most famous screen comedy double-act of all time. Between them they made hundreds of films, most of which are available to view. But their comedy work wasn't solely in films. Laurel spent several years working on the British variety stage, followed by several more touring the United States in Vaudeville. Babe Hardy too had spells on the American stage early on in his career, as a singer.
And then, when Laurel and Hardy's screen career was over, Laurel returned to the British Variety stage, and took with him his American partner, Oliver Hardy. And so what of the accounts of all the years these comic geniuses spent on stage? Where are they? Laurel & Hardy films have spawned hundreds of books and thousands of magazine articles, but written work on their stage shows wouldn't fill one magazine, much less a book. Not, that it is, until along came the two books pictured below.

POST CONVENTION COMMENTS
The Laurel & Hardy Helpmates Convention went off brilliantly,
with over 150 dedicated fans converging on the Holiday Inn, Chatham,
and enjoying a non-stop fest of pure LAUREL & HARDY entertainment from 11am till 11pm.
Combine this with the related attractions and
you have the best of entertainment
- for less than £1 an hour. UNBEATABLE!

Just wanted to say what a fab Laurel and Hardy Convention - well done
indeed! It was truly amazing. It was wonderfully organised and made for a
most enjoyable and full day of fun. I particularly enjoyed meeting the authors,
Ray Andrew, Glenn Mitchell and of course the wonderful 'A.J' Marriot who
gave such a wonderful and comical presentation on a preview of his forthcoming
book the 'USA Tours' - which made it ever so special. It was really interesting
to see L&H on the ipad/iphone
from Russell Babidge - so I can't wait to hear more details on any future
launch.
I must also mention the Hotel which was really excellent and most
comfortable, a lovely warm pool and
pleasant atmosphere all round. Everything was spot on and couldn't have been
better.

Just to say what a great weekend it was for the Convention. Myself and Andrew had a great time. I was on the edge of my seat when A.J Marriot was doing the talk on the U.S tours with the photos and the film footage. Was well pleased to see it. Andrew and myself found A.J very funny. He broke the ice right away. A big thank you to all and all the hard work that had gone into it and a big 'YES' - I would say to do it again.

It's hard to believe but, in 1947, comedy
legends Laurel & Hardy
played a week at Butlins Skegness, during a tour of British Variety
theatres.

Over the Bank Holiday weekend of 23-26 May, a
large party of Laurel and Hardy fans went to
Butlins Skegness to trace their footsteps.
As well as a "Locations Tour" there were Laurel & Hardy Film Shows;
plus
all the entertainment and facilities provided by
BUTLINS.
